Random Thoughts

I absolutely hate/fear spiders.  I have this incredible phobia that extends to not even being able to kill them.  My ex said I even had a spider yell.  If I yelled his name in a certain tone he knew that I had ran into a spider and he needed to come down pronto to kill it.   Eventually, he didn’t need to come down and kill it because that spider yell brought one of our cats running and she usually killed it before he could get there.  The condo really hasn’t had spiders in it.  Once, last summer, we found a spider on the balcony and Eduardo killed it.  Sunday night, I saw the biggest freaking spider I had seen in a long time scurry across the living room floor.  Big and gordita!  I yelled for Eduardo and he grabbed his work boot and killed it.  I was terrified it would scurry off before he could get there and kill it or he would miss it.  Either of those options would have had him hunting high and low for that critter until it was killed.

Or not!!! I get a letter dated June 21st saying that I hadn’t graduated and was missing a class.  They are correct.  I never took the class.  What I got was a signed petition for waiver and substitution of course.  Everyone that was supposed to sign it signed it.  This means that they allowed me to take a different class with similar content rather than the required class.  The counselor said I had everything I need to graduate.  I expected to graduate in May.  So they send me a letter saying that I could graduate if I fixed the problem by the semester after application.  Just one small problem with that!!! They didn’t send me the darned letter until AFTER the following semester was over. Umm… yeah… real helpful.  So I have been calling for the last 2 days trying to get someone in the right department to take my call.  So far all I have managed to do is get forwarded to voice mail.  I have left 3 different voicemails for three different people and not one phone call back.  ARGH!!!!

Wedding pictures

Sadly, I don’t think many wedding pictures are going to make it on to the blog.  I might put some up of just me.  I put everything up on snapfish and then sent an email to JUST my family to let them know.  He was like… how could you do that.  I’m like… it is my family.  They probably want to see pictures.  He does not like people seeing his photos.  Snapfish has all these cheesy little gifts that you can make from the pictures.  I also noticed you can make memory books from your pictures also.  I talked to Eduardo and I am going to make up a little memory book with our photos in it.  I like this better than making up my own book.  I think I would get stumped by all of the options I have and not be able to figure out what to do.  This little application gives me just enough options to put out something nice but not so many options that I drown in them.

A belated update

I can not believe how fast time flies.  I have had things to write about but simply haven’t gotten around to writing about them.
Last Saturday, we went to Eduardo’s company picnic.  It was a simple affair but I enjoyed it.  They divided the employees up into teams and they had a little soccer tournament.    Sadly, Eduardo’s team was horrible and didn’t get the past the first game.  Men and women from the upper management team did a Korean BBQ.  They had pork and beef, rice and some other things that I simply didn’t recognize.  It was all delicious.  While I was on the sidelines watching Eduardo play, another woman started talking to me.  She was very friendly and I enjoyed her company a lot.  Afterwards, I discovered that she was the wife of someone that works on his team.  After the soccer game, we all sat together and ate lunch.  We then played some picnic type games like the three-legged race and the sack race.  I have no idea what race I got involved in but our team lost and we won some soap.  I have to admit that I am glad we lost.  The winning team won lemonade makers and that would not have been very useful in our house.   Despite staying in the shade all day, I ended up looking like a lobster.  Currently, I am peeling a little on my face *sigh*
This week was my week for embarrassments I think.  Saturday morning before the picnic I got up and put the kettle on to make some coffee.   Eduardo and I got into a big discussion and it totally slipped my mind (for several hours?) that I had put the kettle on.  Needless to say it was burned dry and blackened on the bottom.  Thank goodness I didn’t hurt the stove!  I would like to say this was the first time I had ever done this but it wasn’t.  Mike can attest to the couple of times I burned it dry on a regular burner and had to pry the kettle off the coils with a knife.  VERY SAD!  So… we decided to get an electric kettle with an automatic shutoff to replace the kettle that was now officially dead.  Did you know these guys are made out of plastic???  We are the proud owners of a black, plastic electic kettle that boils water lickety-split.  You hear that mom?  Next time you visit, you don’t have to wait 10 minutes for your coffee.  And now… neither do we!!
We have been taking advantage of our swimming pool.  Somehow, Eduardo has managed to convince me that there is nothing to fear in the pool and I should get it and do a bit of swimming.  Every day, we either work out in the gym or go swimming.  We actually swim laps and last night we were having little races.  Last night, we started to head to the pool and it was really cloudy and a few rain drops started to fall.  No life guards were on duty so we went back home assuming the pool was temporarily closed.  I took off my swim suit bottoms and switched over to undies but hadn’t gotten around to doing anything else.  About 45 minutes later, the sun was out so I suggested we go to the pool again.  I grabbed towel and pool pass and went on down.  It was open so we swam for about 30 minutes.  We come back home and I am stripping off my wet clothes (I wear a long Tshirt) and what do I see?????? Not bright blue swimming bottoms but bright orange underwear!!!!  I went swimming in my underwear.  I go running to where Eduardo is and I say, "You won’t believe this but I went swimming in my underwear."  He looks at me like this is no big deal and says, "I know".  I am like why didn’t you tell me and his response is "What for?"  How practical.  Him telling me would have done nothing other than freak me out and to be honest my underwear covered no less than what my swimming bottoms did.   Still a little embarrassing!!!
And back to the picnic.  Eduardo and I have had a bit of a hard time with socializing.  We rarely go out with my friends because he is uncomfortable speaking English.  We rarely go out with his friends because he has no desire to invite them over.  We go out only if they invite us.  I don’t push too hard because they are his friends – not mine.  I don’t mind seeing them but neither do I seem to have made really good friendships with any of them.   Eduardo gets along with the husband of the girl that I met at the picnic.  I suggested to Eduardo that he invite them over for an afternoon/evening.  We can enjoy the pool together (they don’t have a pool and wish they did) and have a BBQ or just something simple for supper.  Maybe this could be the start of ‘our’ friends.  We need some ‘our’ friends that both of us are comfortable being with.  He invited them to our place for next weekend!  I am excited.  We haven’t done much socializing and sometimes I feel a little lonely.  Does this mean we have to clean up the house??? Ok… the house is clean… but a little messy.
PS.  Senor Campos is fine. He arrived back at his house on Wednesday.

Senor Campos

Almost every week for the last 4 years, I have been visiting a gentleman that is homebound.  He lives in a small apartment in a senior citizen home close to where I live.  I was matched up with him through a volunteer agency that provides companions to elderly people that can not easily get outside of their home.  I indicated during the interview that I only wanted to get matched up with someone who spoke Spanish.  I wanted to practise my Spanish while I volunteered.  When I was in Canada, I did the same type of volunteer work and enjoyed it so I thought I would try it again.
Lately, it has been difficult to visit him.  For some strange reason, I seem to have nothing to say.   I don’t know if it is because my life is so boring that I don’t have anything to talk about or just that I can’t think in Spanish so it is difficult to move from one topic or another or what the problem is.   Or maybe it is just because my life is zooming by so fast that I find it hard to carve out time to visit him.  It shouldn’t be hard to carve out time to see him and I feel guilty sometimes when this feels like a chore more than like something fun.  On Wednesday, I was thinking that exact thought.  That is was feeling like a chore and I wish I didn’t have to visit.  Not that I wanted to wish any ill-will on him at all.  It was more like I wished that I got a call that went something like this… "Lo siento.   no estoy libre esta noche porque mi hija esta aqui".  In other words, he had company or was going out.    I certainly wasnt expecting a phone call from his daughter saying, "Im sorry, my father is in the hospital so you can’t visit tonight."  They don’t know what is wrong with him but apparently he fainted in his apartment.  They think he might have had a stroke.  I asked to be kept updated but she hasn’t called again.  I will probably call tomorrow and see what is up.  If he is still in the hospital then I would like to visit on Sunday.

1.  Leak in roof was fixed by the time we got home.  We now have a brown ring around the light socket.  I am not quite sure how much I care about this.
2.  37 cats are cut out.  I am now 1/3 done the cat material.  Pictures.  I might try to do that although I am lousy at putting up pictures on my blog.  This seems to require some kind of organization that I simply don’t possess.  I figure it will take at least another month before I have enough pieces cut out that I could start sewing on one of the three sections of cats.
3.  At long last I have figured out what is causing the pain in my underarm and this on-again-off again lump that I have had for 2 years.  I discovered that it is connected to my birth control cycle.  When I am taking the real birth control pills, the lump gradually starts growing until it reaches its height right before I take the fake pills.  Almost exactly 1 week before the end of the real pills,  if the lump is going to give me pain… it will start then.  It is almost so precise that I know if I don’t have the pain by Sunday there will be no pain this month.  After the week of fake pills,  the lump is totally 100% gone.  And the cycle begins again.  I have absolutely no idea what this means but I need to get to my doctor to find out.  I hope it doesn’t mean that I need to go off the pill.  Eduardo and I aren’t quite ready to be thinking of possible pregnancy.
And that is all that is on my mind that I wish to share for today.

Raindrops are falling on my head…

But wait… I’m inside!  I went to grab my workout bra from the laundry room and stepped in a big puddle of wet.  My first thought was that the washing machine or the taps behind it had started leaking.  I turned on the light to survey the damage.  As I am staring at the water on the floor dumbfounded, I realize I hear this very small… splish… splish…. and the water on the floor looks like splatter.    The water is actually leaking from the light socket.  We are in a top floor condo so the only person at fault for water coming through the ceiling is the condo.  This is actually a good thing because I can simply call the office and they will deal with everything including fixing any damage.  The water pipes above the condo leaked right about when I moved in.  For you long time readers, you will remember that on the day I took possession of the condo, I discovered a caved-in ceiling in my front closet.  Anyways, back to the story.  I kicked a bucket under the leak but didn’t have time to clean up the water.  In the morning?  You have got to be kidding.  It is all we can do to make it on time for his pick-up. I called the emergency service on the way to the car.  This is an emergency right?  Believe it or not, they called back WITHIN 5 minutes.  Hopefully, they will resolve the issue today.

This weekend was a bit of a short weekend because Eduardo had to go to work on Saturday morning.   I did groceries and picked up our very first knife – the 5” Santoku.  I don’t like the way it cuts baby carrots but other than that… works great!  One small glitch that I didn’t anticipate is that it is a hair too big to fit in the knife block that my brother made for me.  For the moment, we are storing it in the drawer.

I spent a good part of my weekend cutting up little pieces of material.   After realizing that it takes close to an hour to cut out each cat (7 of the 21 pieces needed for each cat), I decided that I needed less cats on this darned quilt.   I ‘redesigned’ the quilt to include a much larger border around the edge and put two broad sashes down the quilt from top to bottom so that the cats will be divided into 3 sets.  This got rid of the need for 30 cats and 63 little bitty pieces.  I managed to cut out 25 cats this weekend or almost ¼ of the quilt.  I haven’t managed to convince Eduardo to cut out any cats.  He thinks that it is hard or I wouldn’t be spending so much time doing it.  It is not hard, just time consuming because you need to be exact.  My goal is to try to cut out 3 or 4 cats every night this week.  We will see if I manage to accomplish that goal this week.  I have almost enough material for all the cats.  I am not going to duplicate any of the cats in the individual sections so I need 50 different pieces of material for the middle section.  After I get all the cats cut out of the material that I have, I am going to figure out how many more pieces of material I need and see if I can talk Mom into giving me some of them (or maybe even all of them).  Wouldn’t it be totally cool if she would give me some?  This would be a quilt made out of 3 generations of material: mine, my mom’s and my grandmother’s.  After that… it is cutting out the background pieces and then piecing it together.

We did a bit of swimming this weekend.  I even got in the pool despite not having gotten in water above my knees in like 10 years.  I do not particularly like to be in water that is over my head.  We swam back and forth a little bit doing some laps.  I feel a few muscles that I had forgotten existed.  It was fun and I am glad that we did it.

Sadly, the weekend is over and it is back to the work week.

A week already???

Where does time go?
Lets see if I can remember everything I might have done during the last week….
Last Thursday, we dropped off some items at our church yard sale.  I wish I could say we were organized enough to give them everything but we weren’t!  Saturday we thought of several things that we had forgotten but it was too late by then.  We also picked up my mail at the church.  In my mail box was a gift certificate by some friends for our wedding.  We got a 75$ gift certificate for Bed Bath and Beyond.  We have been spending the last week trying to figure out what to do with it.  Initially we thought we might get some dishes.  Bed Bath and Beyond had some nice dishes in the contemporary square design that we like and in a colour that we thought we would like.  Sadly, it was considerably more than the gift certificate and we are trying to not spend money that we don’t need to spend.  *sigh*  But when you think about it, our dishes are perfectly serviceable so we don’t NEED new dishes.  So… I browsed through their website looking for more ideas and came up with… KNIVES!  Yep… knives.  We have knives…. knives that we could literally throw at each other without worry about hurting the other person.  They do the job… more or less…. but lets be honest… you can’t slice a tomato in this house unless you use the bread knife.  All of my knives are 10 years or older.  I did bunches and bunches of research on knives over the last week.  I discovered that there are knives and then there are the crown jewels.  That’s right, some knife sets are worth about as much as the crown jewels of Queen Elizabeth.  Who knew that knives could be so expensive??!!?!  So… in a very methodical method, I decided to research from the bottom up to get to the cheapest knives I could find that had consistently good reviews.  I figured at some point, the money was simply not going to buy that much better of a knife so why spend it.  The 75$ is still not going to buy us a knife SET but it will buy us some open stock knives to replace the ones that we are in dire need of replacing… like say the bent knife or the knife with the broken off tip.  Indeed, that is the state of some of the knives that we use.  Besides, the knife sets seem to include steak knives which we just don’t use (except as knives to cut up veggies).  That seems like a waste of money.  I selected the Calphalon Contemporary set.  I wish I could say that it was the stainless steel set which look VERY cool but they cost twice as much and I am not paying twice as much just for the appearance.  Call me cheap but that is a little ridiculous.
To make the most of our gift certificate we are going to buy our knives over a period of time. *evil grin here*  Bed Bath and Beyond are ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS sending 20% off any single item coupons to our house.  We just got one yesterday.   Normally I throw these out so we don’t have any stockpiled but every time we get one, we are going to head to BB&B and buy the next knife in our set.  I figure this will let us get 4 knives.  3 of the more expensive ones and then maybe the cheaper paring knife.  Ok, enough about knives.
Over the weekend, I decided that I was going to start on Christmas presents for the kids.  I had purchased some material that had a kids book stamped on it.  Each page has a colour on it and pictures of items that are that colour.  For example, red has pictures of roses and balloons.  All of the pictures have their names underneath it in English, Spanish and French.  I had bought it to make for Eduardo’s little girl.  Over the weekend, I realized that Eduardo’s little girl and my nephew are exactly 4 days apart in age.  If it was appropriate for her then it would be appropriate for him.  He lives in Canada where English and French are the official languages so the multilingual part of the book would work for him too.   We bought another book and some batting and I sewed them up this weekend.  They are super cute.  All I have to do is redo the ‘spine’ of the book as I only basted it in place to begin with and hand sew the openings I used to turn the pages the right way out.
I think Eduardo wants to buy a doll for his little girl.  If that is the case, I will probably make some doll clothes for her.  We have also talked about making some Pink Panther pyjamas for his little boy.  He loves the Pink Panther and wants a costume.  These aren’t available but I suggested that maybe we could make pyjamas instead.
Over the weekend, Eduardo and I picked out a pattern for me to make a quilt.  We are using the quilt that my grandmother gave my parents at their wedding.  This was like 40 years ago.  It is almost in perfect shape.  There is one material that Grandma used that has worn significantly more than others.  Most of these pieces have little holes in them.  This quilt has a lot of sentimental value so I don’t want to wear it any more than it already is.  So… we are making a pieced cat quilt.  This could be fun or a nightmare depending on how you look at it.  I think it is going to be made of some 3000 pieces.  ARGH!!! I am loco.  Anyways.  It needs like 140 cats on it.  The original pattern shows each cat made out of a different material.  Umm… that is not going to happen.  I am going to try to make 3 cats out of each piece of material and scatter them throughout the quilt.  I looked through all of my scraps and the scraps I received from my grandma and found about 35 different materials that we thought were appropriate.  I think I might ask mom if she wants to contribute some material.  If not, I will go to the store and buy some.  Hopefully, this weekend I will start cutting out the cat materials in the right shapes.
If there is more… I have forgotten about it.  Have a great weekend everybody.

Graduation Ceremony

Last night, I attended Eduardo’s graduation ceremony from English classes.   He does not attend classes at a school but attends classes subsidized by a Catholic church in our area.  The ESL program there is very organized and quite large.  It is also incredibly cheap!!! Each semester they have over 100 students.  At the end of the year, they award students with certificates for the classes they attended and perfect attendance.   Eduardo went up with his Advanced Class and received his certificate for attending 29 classes since January.  He also received back his exam on Tuesday and got 92.2% on it.  He did very well and was one of three students that received over 90%.  I am definitely the proud wife.

Congratulations Eduardo if you are reading this.  I am very proud of your accomplishments!

I am also the happy wife because he is finished classes for the summer.  He may take a short conversation class in July but he doesn’t know yet.  I am happy for the break because I would like to do something else on Tuesdays and Thursdays besides drive him to class and wait for his class to end.  It is a love/hate thing.  I want to support him and help him but I would also like to just hang out and do my own thing without having to spend two nights doing his thing.  Yep… love/hate.   I feel bad having these mixed feelings because I often wonder if I am being selfish for even thinking them.
